It’s been almost two weeks since I’ve returned from #MTYretreat. For an entire week, I’ve tried to sum up the entire experience, every time, coming up short with words. I keep replaying a moment of laughter between Chrisitna and I in the bathroom. If you are familiar with Billy Blanks from Tae Bo, you know he goes HAM on the step up exercises, the ones that target those abs. Well, I imitated him saying, being at that retreat made me want to STEP IT UP!
Note: Throughout my post, you will find few gems from Myelik and some of the guest speakers
Curated by thee gem dropper of MYTAUGHTYOU podcast + CEO of Curlbox Myelik is a woman of excellence. She’s said it many times but being at this retreat was like OK GIRL! I see you. She set the bar so high with this retreat, I’m pretty sure I can speak for all the attendees when I say being there was life changing.
Myleik Gem: If it doesn’t make dollars, it don’t make sense? The atmosphere was filled with so many beautiful and humble spirits. That alone should force you to level up. Please understand, it was all LOVE! Everyone and I mean everyone was confident, living their purpose without feeling the need to compete or brag. Having a conversation with some of the women, I realized we were a little intimidated by each other accolades, but not in a jealous way, in a way that was like WOW!! You are mastering your craft, in your lane. I respect that, now how can I support you? How can we sit and build together?
Jen Ekuele Gem- Each of us is uniquely positioned to give something to the world.
The week of the trip, I wrote down a few expectations for myself. This was my first time truly investing in a trip that wasn’t all about play. It was important that I took something HOME with me. I didn’t attend just to stunt for the gram and say oh I was there. No ma’am! It was an opportunity that not only spoke to my professional life but my personal. Even while I was on the beach, NOTES were being taken left and right.
Khalana Barfield Brown Gem-Make Room for what’s important to you.
Karleen Roy Gem-Build your life and brand based on the type of life you want to have
There was a moment during dinner with Luvvie and Myliek that really summed up some of my feelings on that trip. Luvvie was explaining how there was a time in her career where she didn’t feel like she belonged in the “room”. You know that moment where you were invited someplace or you were among some people you felt were”bigger” than you. Yes, that moment. For whatever reason you ended up there, there was a reason for that. Own it and Embrace it.
Karleen Roy Gem: Create your own lane and Master your craft.
Following dinner, we had a bonfire chat with Myleik and Necole from XONecole.com. They talked about Necole’s transitions and Myelik’s response nearly sent me into tears. She said it takes TIME when you are transitioning, sometimes 3-4 years for that shift to look and feel like something. Talk about an on time God. WHEW! I whispered to myself, be gentle with yourself Simone. That moment also took me back to an answer Zim gave during her masterclass session. Promise you there were several moments during her masterclass session where I wanted to yell preach but didn’t want to embarrass myself. There was a moment where she was answering a question about knowing when and how to transition, when she said, she relies on scripture, but not just any scripture, but John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.
You see what I mean? PREACHHH ZIM! Promise you on the inside, I was screaming GLORY TO GOD!!!
Jen Ekuele Gem- Keep my story rooted in purpose
Matthew 9:28-30 -Do you believe I am able to do this- GOD
My personal reflection-How often do we look at ourselves and see “success” in one area and think that’s it for us. We just can’t wrap our minds around the fact that we can have professional and personal success. First, it depends on what we consider success. Success looks different for everyone, but we are able to have it all if we BELIEVE we can. It may not all come at the same time and that’s OKAY, but that doesn’t mean we have to limit ourselves and the God we serve. For so long, I limited myself and God. I kept saying, I have personal success, a beautiful family. For years my personal life just kept growing and getting better and slowly but surely, I convinced myself, this will be it for me. Let me make the most of it.
Thanking this retreat for reminding me to take the limits OFF.
